Painting, of saddled stallion
Add to album

This miniature painting of a saddled stallion in profile was made around 1820 in Kishengarh in India. It is a good example of the clear vigorous style of the painters of Kishengarh state.

The painting is in opaque mineral colours on buff paper. The top half of the stallion is light blue while the lower half of his body and legs are hennaed in orange edged with a flower border. The stallion has a head plume and plaited mane. The gold saddlecloth is embroidered with blue sprigs. With this outfit and highly decorative appearance, the horse was groomed for a procession.
