This man's coat, known as a 'chapan', was made in Uzbekistan, Bukhara between around 1880-90.
The purple silk velvet coat is embroidered with metallic silver and gold thread in different stitches. It has a bold floral stem design.
Coats such as this would have formed part of the costume worn by relations and courtiers of the ruling emir.
