Add to album

This brass casket was made in Western Iran in the 13th or 14th century.

The casket is finely incised all-over with geometric roundels containing arabesque designs, birds and animals, and pseudo-inscriptions on the bevelled edges. All the roundels are inlaid with thin silver wire.

A considerable number of caskets of this form have survived. These may have been used as jewellery or money boxes. Its Persian (farsi) term is 'dorj'.
