Portrait, of Admiral Jan Willem De Winter

This miniature portrait of Admiral Jan Willem De Winter, by Daniel Orme, was presented to Admiral Adam Duncan by De Winter as a mark of respect upon his defeat by Duncan at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797.

The portrait of watercolour on ivory is mounted in a gold frame.

During his period of captivity after the Battle of Campberdown, De Winter established a friendship with Duncan. This was largely in response to the consideration and kindness that Duncan had shown him. The same artist, Daniel Orme, painted a similar portrait if Duncan who gave it to De Winter when he was returned home. the second miniature is now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
