Officer's cap

This embroidered officer's cap of an elite Scottish unit in the army of King William III dates from around 1692. This type of cap was worn by grenadiers, the strongest, most formidable troops of the 1690s.

The cap is highly decorated. The royal crowns and cypher (initials) of King William and Queen Mary are embroidered on the front. On either side of this are thistles, indicating the Scottish identity of the regiment.

In 1688 the last Stewart king was forced to abdicate. The new King, William III was involved in a major European conflict against France. The whole of Britain, including Scotland, had to be secured against the King's enemies. Scotland's resources of military manpower were to be used to their best advantage. King William had several elite Scottish units raised to fight against the French in Flanders.
