Plate

This blue and white earthenware plate was made to commemorate Scottish military heroes. It dates from around 1810.

The dish is decorated in blue and white underglaze transfer. Scotland is represented by the female figure Caledonia, wearing a bonnet and plaid. She holds a scroll listing Scottish war heroes. To the left of her is a Highland warrior and at her feet putti, representing the Arts.

The scroll lists heroes of recent wars against France, along with those of the earlier Scottish kingdom such as Sir William Wallace and King Robert the Bruce. The later names on the scroll include Admiral Duncan, Sir Ralph Abercromby, and Sir Thomas Graham, Lord Lynedoch.
