This engraving depicts Alexander Leslie, General of the Scottish Army. It dates from 1642.

General Alexander sits astride is horse, dressed in heavy armour. The picture is entitled 'Alexander General Lesley General of the Scotish Army.'

General Alexander Leslie, Earl of Leven was an experienced general in the Swedish army. In 1638 he returned to Scotland to create a new Scottish army, which he commanded during the civil wars of the 1640s. In 1644 he led the army into England to help in the English Parliament's war against King Charles I. The presence of Leslie's Scottish troops helped to bring about the King's defeat.
