Medal (obverse), commemorating victory of Oliver Cromwell's troops over Scottish army at Battle of Dunbar, 1650

This is the obverse of a silver medal commemorating the victory of Oliver Cromwell's troops over the Scottish army at the Battle of Dunbar in September 1650. Medals such as this were given to soldiers in Cromwell's army who distinguished themselves in battle.

The obverse bears a portrait of Oliver Cromwell. Embossed above the portrait are the words 'Word at Dunbar The Lord of Hosts Septem Y3 1650'. Barely visible in the background are the Scottish and English troops fighting at the Battle of Dunbar.

In 1645, Oliver Cromwell had created a powerful, modern army for the English Parliament. England always had greater resources of money and manpower than Scotland due to its larger size and greater population. By 1650 it had an army that could match the Scots for training and discipline.
