Cannon, probably for use by Army of Solemn League and Covenant

This small brass cannon was made by James Monteith, an Edinburgh pewterer, and probably used by the Army of the Solemn League and Covenant. It is dated 1642.

The cannon is inscribed in relief 'JACOBUS MONTEITH ME FECIT EDINBURG ANNO DOM. 1642.'

Some 164 years after it was made in Scotland, this gun was found amongst the defences of the city of Bhartpur in India when it was attacked by forces of the British Empire in 1826. The gun was given to Captain Carmichael Lewis, an officer in the British Army, as part of a reward for his gallantry in the attack on Bhartpur. It is possible that the gun had been originally captured from the Scottish army during a defeat by the English, and sold on successfully to India.
