Bottles

These two glass bottles date from the 19th century. The one on the left was found during dredging operations at Swineabby Farm at Blackburn in West Lothian. The one on the right was found in a rubbish dump near Tulliallan Castle in Kincardine in Fife.

The left-hand bottle was used for aerated water and was produced for the Edinburgh firm Henry Ltd. The right-hand bottle was used for coffee essence and was produced for the Edinburgh firm Dalrymple & Co.

In Victorian times, advertising grew and was used by manufacturers as a way of appealing to their customers. Brand goods were developed and certain types of container were recycled. These included bottles which were a useful means of advertising products.
