Model, of Yarmouth shrimp boat Coronation
Add to album

This wooden model represents the Yarmouth shrimp boat 'Coronation'. The original was built by Beeching Bros for E Liffen and is typical of the small shrimp boats which fished off Great Yarmouth at the end of the 19th century. The model was built to a scale of 1:24 by Mr P A Rumbelow of Great Yarmouth.

'Coronation' would have had a crew of one or two men, or a man and a boy. Her foredeck was protected by a washstrake - the planking at the top of the boat's side. This was characteristic of the shrimping boats.

Sails or oars were used to reach the fishing grounds. Once there, the boat turned broadside to the tide and towed a trawling net in the swift tides. The shrimp catch was sieved at sea to remove seaweed.
