Model, of beach punt Maria
Add to album

This wooden model represents the beach punt 'Maria', a traditional inshore fishing boat from the Suffolk coast. 'Maria' was built at Southwold in 1886.

The model was built to a scale of 1:12 by Mr L H Foster of Colchester in Essex.

Boats like these were fished by longshoremen - beach fishermen who worked off the open shore. Various types of fishing took place throughout the year - trawling for shrimps and plaice, long-line fishing, crab and lobster pots, drift-net fishing for inshore herring and sprat fishing in the winter.
