Model, of Sheringham crab boat Wild Rose
Add to album

Sheringham crab boats were commonly found along the north coast of Norfolk from Wells-next-the-sea to Cromer. This wooden model, built to a scale of 1:24 by Mr L Foster of Colchester in Essex, represents the Sheringham crab boat 'Wild Rose' from 1926.

Crabbers had six oar ports cut in the sides so that oars could be passed through them and the boats carried from the sea up the steep beaches of the Norfolk coast.

Early crab boats were built of oak. Larchwood, which was easier to repair, was later substituted when boats began to be used for whelking near the rocks.
