Model, of destroyer HMS Handy

This wooden model represents the destroyer 'HMS Handy', a warship dating from 1895. Built by the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Co Ltd of Govan, 'HMS Handy' was powered by two triple-expansion steam engines which gave her a speed of over 27 knots. The model is built to a scale of 1:48.

To avoid detection these destroyers had a very low profile and did not have a conventional bridge. 'HMS Handy' was armed with one 12-pounder gun and five 6-pounders. She was also fitted with two 18-inch torpedo tubes.

Warships of this type were introduced to combat the new threat of fast torpedo-boats and were initially called torpedo-boat destroyers. This was later shortened to destroyers.
