Model, of brigantine Raven
A brigantine is a two-masted vessel, square-rigged on the foremast and fore-and-aft rigged on the mainmast. This wooden model is of the 'Raven', a trading brigantine built in 1875 for export by James Keefe of Prince Edward Island in the Gulf of St Lawrence in Canada. The 'Raven' was bought by J C Hoad of Rye in Sussex.
The model is based on drawings by Harold A Underhill in 'Sailing Ship Rigs and Rigging'. It was built to a scale of 1:72 by the model maker, Dr Stephen Rowland of Northampton.
A well designed brigantine was one of the finest varieties of merchant sailing ship. In the 1860s and 1870s, Canadian builders completed many brigantines for export to Britain.
