Model, of motor fishing boat Rival, KY 1299

This wooden model is of the motor fishing boat 'Rival, KY 1299'. This diesel-engined vessel was built in 1938 and operated as a drifter off the east coast of Scotland. The model is built to a scale of 1:24.

'Rival' had a wide beam and a cruiser stern. She carried a crew of seven and was equipped with 70 nets. The model shows the nets with their floats and lines stored on deck. With an 88 horsepower engine, she was capable of a speed of 8.5 knots.

Economic to run, 'Rival' was built as a general purpose vessel but was capable of seine net or great-line fishing. A seine net is a long weighted net attached to a float line. The most productive net in sea fishery is a purse seine in which the bottom of the net is drawn shut with a line running through rings.
