This wooden model represents a typical 20th century clinker-built dinghy or yacht's tender. (Clinker-built means the planks of the hull overlap) The model is built to a scale of 1:6.
The dinghy's generous proportions would have allowed for a heavy load of passengers and stores. The model is equipped with two brass rowlocks and two oars. To construct the boat, yellow pine was steamed and bent into shape to be used for planking. Mahogany was used for the top strake (side planking), the transom (the crossbeam at the stern) and the thwarts (seating planks set across the vessel).
The word dinghy is derived from the Hindi word 'dingi' or 'dengi' meaning a small open boat that is used on rivers.
