This wooden model is of the steam trawler 'Isabella Greig'. The original boat was built in 1928 and was employed on the white fishing grounds in the North Sea and around the west coast of Scotland. The model is built to a scale of 1:48.

When the fishing trawl was drawn on board, the catch would have been emptied into fish 'ponds'. These can be seen on the model, in front of the trawl winch. The fish would have been sorted in the ponds and stored in boxes in the hold which had a capacity of about 680 boxes. For trawling at night, a searchlight would have been used.

Trawling was first adopted in Scotland in 1882, although it had been in use in England for some 40 years. By 1930 more than 200 steam trawlers were fishing out of the port of Aberdeen.
