Model, of zulu Cetewayo

A Zulu was a type of traditional Scottish fishing boat. This wooden model is of the Zulu 'Cetewayo', a herring fishing boat of the type used on the east coast of Scotland in the early 20th century. It is built to a scale of 1:16.

The crew of this type of vessel consisted of six men and a boy. Carrying an even number of nets was thought to be unlucky and this type of boat would have carried either 89 or 99 nets.

It is said that the Zulu type of fishing boat was introduced into Scotland in 1879 for William Campbell of Lossiemouth. To begin with, it was most commonly found along the south coast of the Moray Firth but it later spread to the rest of Scotland.
