Model, of full-rigged ship

This wooden model of a full-rigged ship with its sails set was made in the 1870s by the Chinese crew of the lightship 'Lang Shan' near Shanghai. It is typical of the clipper ships used in the ocean-going cargo trade in the second half of the 19th century. The model is built to a scale of 1:64.

The term full-rigged applies to three-masted ships with square sails on all masts. Often there are triangular staysails before the masts and a gaffsail on the mizzen (aft) mast.

Although steam-powered ships were well established by 1875, many sailing ships were still in service, particularly in the ocean-going cargo trade. These clipper ships were popular from about 1850 to 1880 and many famous clippers were built in Scottish shipyards.
