This detail shows a mark of the Glasgow potters J. & M.P. Bell & Company. It is on the base of a lustre-glazed earthenware bowl produced by the company between 1842 and 1880.
There were many variations in Bell's marks. This one consists of a transfer-printed bird above a looped ribbon. The ribbon is inscribed with the pattern name 'BRITISH & FOREIGN BIRDS' above the company initials 'J. & M.P.B. & Co.'
This company, which became one of the biggest and best known potteries in Scotland, was founded by the brothers John and Matthew Perston Bell and was in production by 1842. The Glasgow Pottery, or 'Bells' as it was more commonly known, produced a wide range of wares.
