This red transfer-printed earthenware soup plate was made for export to South East Asia by the Glasgow potters, J. & M.P. Bell & Co. Ltd. The pattern is called 'CASTILE' and the plate dates from between 1881 and the 1920s.

The border pattern consists of vine leaves and palmettes with a line of beading on the outer edge and a line of Greek Key pattern on the inner edge. The centre shows a star in the middle surrounded by a band similar to that of the border pattern, but on a smaller scale.

Bells were exporting pottery in large quantities during the second half of the 19th century. They developed a range of designs specially geared to the Eastern market based on oriental motifs and subjects.
