Egg cups, with views of Britain

These five porcelain souvenir egg cups were made in Germany in the late 19th century. They are transfer printed with views of Glasgow, London and the Burns Mausoleum in Dumfries.

From top right (clockwise) the views are: Trafalgar Square in London, Burns' Mausoleum in Dumfries, City Chambers and George Square in Glasgow, City Chambers and George Square in Glasgow, and Glasgow Cathedral.

In the late 19th and early 20 centuries the souvenir market was dominated by cheap porcelain, much of it produced in Germany and Bohemia where labour costs were low and large porcelain industries existed. The view-wares - items decorated with cities, towns and resorts - were very popular. Glasgow City Chambers was built between 1883 and 1888.
