Painting, The Storming of Tel-el Kebir

This oil painting, called 'The Storming of Tel-el Kebir' is by Alphonse Marie de Neuville. The 1st Battalion The Black Watch are shown attacking enemy defences in this battle of the 1882 Egypt campaign. The painting dates from 1883.

Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders - Photograph of a drum major, Fort George, 1940

The success of the Highland Brigade's dawn attack made a dramatic subject for the Frenchman de Neuville, one of the foremost military artists of the 19th century. In a desire for accuracy, de Neuville was advised by officers who had been present at the battle. Many of the individuals in the painting can be identified.
