Document, oath of allegiance of 1st Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers

This oath of allegiance to the Queen was signed in 1860 by the original members of 'Q' Company, 1st Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers.

The first signature on this roll is that of William Thompson, who was elected captain of the company. Later given the title Lord Kelvin, this famous physicist and inventor was Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University.

The 1st Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers was closely connected with Glasgow University. Its members practised rifle drill on the College Green and they signed this oath in the University's Fore Hall.
