Order, of New York Highland Guard

This printed order of the New York Highland Guard, a company of the New York State Militia, dates from 1857.

The order refers to a parade in full uniform on 4 July 1857. The order was given by a Captain William Manson.

The New York Highland Guard was formed by New York citizens of Scottish descent. This was an early example of Scots overseas adopting Highland identity in the military service of their new home countries. As the 79th Highlanders (New York Volunteers), this unit formed a regiment that served with the Union army during the American Civil War. Its first Colonel was named Cameron, who renamed the regiment in honour of the original 79th Cameron Highlanders. He was killed at the first battle of Bull Run in 1861.
