Medals, of Highland Society of London

These silver commemorative medals of the Highland Society of London werepresented to officers and men of The Black Watch (42nd Regiment) after the defeat of the French army in Egypt in 1801. They were designed by Benjamin West, the President of the Royal Academy.

One side of the medal shows the bust of Sir Ralph Abercromby, who was killed in Egypt in 1801. The other shows an adapted version of the design sketch with the Gaelic inscription 'NA FIR A CHOISIN BUAIDH 'SAN EPHAIT' - 'these are the heroes who achieved victory in Egypt'.

The Highland Society of London was formed among influential Scots in London in the late 18th century in order to promote and preserve ideals of Highland tradition.
