Strap end

This leaf-shaped bronze strap end was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

Bronze strap terminal from Newstead

Metal strap ends were attached to leather straps, both for horse harness and human strap fittings, to protect the ends of leather or textile straps. The Roman cavalry needed a range of equipment for its horses, some for everyday use and some for ceremonies.
