Seal impression (cast)
Add to album

This is a 19th century sulphur cast of a seal impression. The impression was made from the seal of Kelso Abbey in Roxburghshire, dating from the 13th century.

The seal depicts the Virgin and Child. The inscription 'SIGILLVM. SANCTE MARIE CHALODENSIS ECCLESIE' identifies the abbey. The gold border is modern cardboard trim.

Kelso Abbey was established in 1128 by a group of monks who came to Scotland from Tiron in France. The monks were granted extensive lands, which brought rent and taxes to the monastery. The abbey was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St John the Evangelist.
