Seal impression (cast), of Edward Balliol

This is a 19th century sulphur cast of a seal impression. The impression was made from the Privy Seal of Edward Balliol, dating from around 1332. Privy seals were generally used for grants of minor government posts or for preliminary grants of land which were later granted under the Great Seal.

The seal depicts a shield with Royal Arms against a hatched background. The inscription 'EDWARDVS DEI GRACIA REX SCOTORVM' translates as 'Edward by the grace of God, king of the Scots'. The gold border is modern cardboard trim.

Edward was the son of King John Balliol who was deposed by the English in 1296. After this Edward was imprisoned in England, though many Scots viewed him as heir to the throne. In 1332 he led an invasion to Scotland and was crowned. He held power with English support until the English king withdrew it in 1356.
