Seal impression (cast)
Add to album

This is a 19th century sulphur cast of a seal impression. The impression was made from the seal of the burgh of Dunblane in Perthshire. The original seal impression possibly dates to the 13th century, but it may be a forgery.

The seal takes its design from an ecclesiastical seal, depicting St Lawrence and St Blane in a niche. The inscription 'S' COMVNE. BURGI. DVNBLANENSIS' identifies the burgh. The gold border is modern cardboard trim.

St Blane reputedly founded a church at Dunblane around 600, giving his name to the burgh. The cathedral, built in the 12th century and substantially rebuilt in the 13th century, was dedicated to St Blane and St Lawrence.
