Seal impression (cast), of John, Earl of Carrick, later King Robert III

This is a 19th century sulphur cast of a seal impression. The impression was made from the seal of John, Earl of Carrick, later King Robert III, dating from around 1383.

The seal depicts the earl as a knight on horseback. The inscription 'S'iohanis p'imogeniti rob'te regis scotorum comitis de carric et senesc scocie' translates as 'Seal of John, eldest son of Robert King of Scots, Earl of Carrick and Steward of Scotland'. The gold border is modern cardboard trim.

John, Earl of Carrick became king when he was around 53 on the death of his father, Robert II. He changed his name to Robert on his accession to the throne, believing John to be an inauspicious name for a king. Unfortunate events had befallen other King Johns, of England, Scotland and France.
