Probable hammerstone

This slightly irregular stone ball was found at Buchan in Aberdeenshire. It was probably used as a hammerstone, and could date any time from 8000 BC to 1100 AD. A number of plain stone balls have been found at Buchan.

Plain spherical ball from Buchan, Aberdeenshire

Carved stone balls without any decoration are difficult to date or to be certain of their function. Some were used as missiles, while others were used as rubbers or hammerstones. This example was probably used as a hammerstone.
