Box

This wooden box with sliding lid is among a number of grave goods placed in the rich burial of a woman and child at Qurneh in Egypt, sometime in the 17th Dynasty. The woman may have been a queen.

The lid pulls off in dovetail grooves. At one end is a wooden peg, which would have been tied to another peg on the box end for sealing up the box. According to the excavation report, when found the box contained a fatty material, with some clothing pressed into it.

The woman buried at Qurneh was a slender individual between 21 and 25 years old. She has signs of tooth decay, which was less common amongst ancient Egyptians than modern peoples. The child was about two and a half years old at death.
