Sculptured stone
Add to album

This sculptured stone was found at the site of the Roman fort at Castlecary in Stirlingshire. It was perhaps part of a decorative frieze for a shrine or temple dedicated to local woodland gods and goddesses. It was carved between 140 and 165 AD.

A hunting scene has been carved on the stone, with deer and archers within a wood.

Roman soldiers enjoyed hunting and fishing for sport. Hunting scenes are depicted on various Roman objects, including bowls, cups, finger rings and large sculptures.
