This lead container is one of two found inside one another during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It dates from between 80 and 100 AD.

The plain, round container has a crack down one face.

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman camps in Scotland. Simple containers such as this one could have been used for a number of purposes.
