Hook with loop

This iron hook was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. Hooks such as these could have been used for a variety of purposes. It dates from between 80 and 180 AD.

The well-preserved hook tapers to a point which is curled round. Its head broadens into a loop for attachment.

Iron was widely used by the Romans for tools, weapons and fittings. Nails, bolts and fastenings were common finds in pits and on the surface at Newstead.
