Possible strap end and buckle plate

This bone object, possibly a strap end, and part of a bronze buckle were found at Jarlshof in Shetland. The possible strap end dates from around 800 to 1100, while the buckle is probably from the medieval occupation at the site, from between 1200 to 1500.

The pointed strap end is broken across the slot. It is decorated with an incised fir tree pattern. The buckle is made of a double plate, and preserves the remains of leather between the two rivets. The actual buckle is missing. A hole has been made against the fold of the object.

People have lived at Jarlshof from the Bronze Age onwards. The name of the site, however, is a creation of Sir Walter Scott.
