Rings and rein guides for yoke
Add to album

These two ring guides for yoke (also known as terrets), the plain ring, and the spiral finger ring, all of bronze, were found in the intertidal zone at Seton Sands near Longniddry in East Lothian. Some or all of the objects may be part of a dispersed hoard. They date from between 0 and 400 AD.

The two rein guides are of a type called 'massive terrets'. They are particularly large and ostentatious harness equipment, with many have been found in Aberdeenshire. The plain ring may also be part of harness equipment.

Leather on harnesses rarely survives, but the metal fittings and ornaments are often preserved. The rein guides range from plain to elaborate examples.
