Cup, saucer & plate

This bone china cup, saucer and plate were made by the Glasgow potters, J. & M.P. Bell & Company. They date from between 1842 and 1880.

The cup has a gold painted strap handle rising from half way up the bowl. The saucer has no indentation for the cup. The inside of the cup and the central panels of the saucer and plate are clear glazed. The cup's exterior and the remaining exterior surfaces of the saucer and plate all have a turquoise glaze. All three items have gold painted rims and decorative gold painted borders.

This company, which became one of the biggest and best known potteries in Scotland, was founded by the brothers John and Matthew Perston Bell and was in production by 1842. The Glasgow Pottery, or 'Bells' as it was more commonly known, produced a wide range of wares.
