Bowl

This earthenware bowl was made in eastern Iran, probably Nishapur, in the 10th century.

The bowl is painted with manganese-purple, yellow and green under a thin, colourless and transparent glaze. Two lateral human figures flank an array of cattle or horses and birds, all set against a yellow background. Around the outside of the bowl runs a crude band of diamond and leaf shapes.

It has been suggested that this type of ware was made exclusively in Nishapur and was intended for the ruling classes.
