Add to album

This earthenware bowl was made in Transoxania in eastern Iran, in the 10th century. Nishapur has been suggested as production centre for related wares.

The bowl is painted in dark brown and orange clay slips under a clear glaze. It shows a ewer in the centre, from which springs a large, fantastic palmette design. Two further palmettes of similar style flank the ewer on either side. The body of the ewer as well as the area below the vessel are occupied by stylised Kufic inscriptions, as yet unread.
