This cotton cover, called a palangposh, was made in Kutch or Gujarat in western India in the early 18th century.

The cover is embroidered with coloured silks. It has a design featuring different flowers and mythical birds.

The cover might have been a wedding gift. Pieces like this were also made for the European market. Gujarat had been the most famous Indian centre for commercial embroidery since at least the 16th century. Silk chain-stitch embroideries on cotton such as this one had come to the fore in the 16th and 17th centuries, produced in centres such as Cambay and Patan.
