This glazed ceramic bowl was made in Iznik in Turkey in the late 16th century. Its body material consists of a small amount of white clay, ground quartz and a soda-lead frit. It is finely textured. Before firing, the vessel is covered with a fine slip of the same composition.

The bowl and its cover are painted under a clear glaze with blue and red tulips, hyacinths and serrated leaves on a white ground. Such floral decoration and the colour scheme adopted on this object came into fashion around 1560.

The Iznik factory in North Western Anatolia was established in the early 15th century. By the end of the 15th century, the Ottoman court began to patronise the factory and between 1500 and 1600 vessels and tiles of exquisite quality were produced as a result. Inspiration for their design came from court design workshops which also supplied specifications for other media such as textiles.
