Door

This wooden panel with ivory detailing is from the side of a pulpit (minbar) positioned to the right of the prayer niche (mihrab) in a mosque. The method of panel-based construction used here involves small interlocking pieces of wood set into raised wooden mouldings. This system allows wood to expand and contract according to variations in temperature and humidity.

The panel has modern red wooden beading in a geometrical pattern. This contains original darker wooden panels carved with relief arabesques. Above and below the central area there are four Arabic inscriptions panels. Each contains an identical reference to the Sultan. The overall geometric pattern of this panel was very popular in Egypt at the time and similar designs can be found on contemporary book bindings and manuscript illuminations.
