Commemorative jar (1 of 2)

This commemorative maiolica jar, probably a betrothal jar, was made at Deruta in Italy in the late 15th or early 16th century.

The jar is painted in blue and yellow-brown with conventional borders. It is inscribed with the names of the betrothed - on this side 'PANTASTLEA', on the other 'ANGUIRSINA'.

The jar has been extensively repainted and it is possible that the untraceable name 'Anguirsina' should read 'Andreana'.
