This maiolica plate was made at Urbino in Italy, perhaps at the Guido di Merlino Workshop, between 1540 and 1545.

The plate is painted in polychrome with an unidentified subject, probably Io. To the left, a woman (Juno) sits with a man pointing to an elderly man (Jupiter) and nymph (Io) to the right. There are two oxen in foreground.

Jupiter loved Io, daughter of Inachus. He transformed her into a white heifer to protect her from the anger of his wife, Juno (Ovid, Metamorphosis, I).
