This maiolica dish was made at Deruta in Italy between around 1550 and 1570.

The dish is painted in yellow and blue lustre with St Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata and with scale pattern and floral ornament on the rim.

Francis received the stigmata, according to the Franciscan theologian and mystic Bonaventura, whilst in retreat on Mount Alverne, the figure of Christ appearing before him. Christ's wounds then appeared on the saint's body and remained there until his death two years later. Plates decorated with this subject matter must have been made for the nearby pilgrimage centre of Assisi, providing an important market and explaining the preponderance of religious subject matter on Deruta pottery at this date.
