Plate (2 of 2)

This maiolica plate was made at the Castellani Workshop in Rome in Italy in 1871. This photograph shows the underside.

The underside of the plate is inscribed 'fatto in Bottega Castellani 26/1/71 DT' [made at the Castellani workshop 26/1/71]. The upper side of the plate is painted in dark blue with a central candelabra, a mask, dolphins, winged sphinxes and grotesques, and is inscribed 'Napoli' and 'Dum Spiro Spero' ['whilst I breathe I hope'].
