Bowl

This maiolica bowl was made at the factory of Giovanni Spinaci & Son in Gubbio in Italy in 1873. It was acquired for the Museum at the Vienna International Exhibition of the same year.

The bowl is moulded and painted in yellow and ruby lustre with a central figure of John the Baptist surrounded by fruit and pine cones. The ribbon entwined around the cross is inscribed 'Agnus Dei' [Lamb of God]. The underside of the upper rim is inscribed 'Spinaci', 'Gubbio Umbria', '11 Feb 1873' in ruby lustre.

Although the factory of Giovanni Spinaci & Son was famous for its kitchen pottery, one of the kilns was reserved for artistic production.
